C2C
is an abbreviation for the coast to coast cycle route
devised by
the Sustrans organisation,
a British charity which promotes sustainable transport methods.
The
Route
The route is approximately 150 miles in length
and runs across northern England from the Irish Sea in the west
to the North Sea
in the east.
The route is signposted along roads and farm tracks and passes
through the beautiful countryside of the Lake District and North
Pennines.
How
long does it take?
It
is definitely challenging and there are some long hill climbs.
How long it takes you depends on your fitness level. Most people
will
complete the route in 2 to 5 days.
Start & Finish
Going
from west to east is usually the easiest way keeping the westerly
winds at your back. Start at Whitehaven
Port or St. Bees Head and finish at Sunderland
or Tynemouth.
Staying
in Penrith
Penrith is
located on the central part of the route and is an ideal
place to overnight with numerous choices of places to eat
out, all within
a short walk for tired legs. Crosby offers safe storage
for bikes and is located on Lowther Street which is next
to Beacon
Edge where the C2C route continues
east.
